TRAINING COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTERS (CHPs)

what we do

Comprehensive Training Programs: We design and deliver training programs that equip CHPs with practical skills in household health screenings, early detection of diseases, and referral protocols. Our curriculum covers a wide range of health topics, including screening for common Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, and malnutrition, as well as infectious diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.
Household Screening Initiatives: Our primary initiative involves training CHPs to conduct household screenings for early detection of health issues within the community. Through regular household visits, CHPs are trained to perform basic diagnostic assessments, identify symptoms, and collect health data, enabling early interventions and reducing the burden on healthcare facilities.
Focus on Prevention and Early Intervention: We emphasize preventive care through health education and behavior change communication. CHPs trained by our organization play a critical role in educating families on health and hygiene practices, nutrition, immunizations, and disease prevention. By promoting early intervention, CHPs help to prevent the progression of illnesses and improve community health outcomes.
Referral and Follow-Up Systems: Our training also includes guidance on building robust referral networks. CHPs are trained to recognize when household members require advanced medical care and refer them to healthcare facilities. In addition, they are taught to follow up with households to ensure that patients receive the necessary care and adhere to treatment plans.
Utilizing Data for Community Health: We train CHPs to collect and record health data during household screenings, which is used to inform public health strategies. This data allows healthcare systems to identify trends, allocate resources effectively, and target interventions where they are most needed.
Supportive Supervision and Continuous Learning: Beyond initial training, we provide ongoing support, mentorship, and refresher courses to ensure CHPs remain up-to-date with the latest health practices and guidelines. We also implement supportive supervision systems to enhance the quality and impact of household screening initiatives.

OUR IMPACT

By training CHPs to conduct household screenings, Afya Reach has significantly improved access to healthcare in remote and underserved areas. Our work has led to early detection of life-threatening conditions, improved disease management, and a stronger link between communities and healthcare facilities. Since inception, we have:
  • Trained more than 800 CHPs across Kirinyaga County.
  • Reached 30,000 households with health screenings and education.
  • Identified and referred more than 2000 patients for timely medical treatment.
Our household screening initiatives have not only improved individual health outcomes but have also contributed to broader public health improvements by preventing disease outbreaks and reducing hospital congestion.
